Emergency – The Fire-Breathing Dragon
When we talk about emergencies, think of a fire-breathing dragon suddenly appearing in your backyard (metaphorically speaking, of course). The word ’emergency’ has its roots in the Latin word ’emergere’, meaning ‘to rise out or up’. Just like an unexpected dragon appearance, emergencies are sudden and demand immediate attention. On the flip side, urgency is more like a persistent cat nudging you for treats. Derived from the Latin ‘urgere’, meaning ‘to press hard, to impel’. Urgency signals that something needs attention soon, but it doesn’t carry the same immediate, life-or-death weight as an emergency. It’s pressing, important, and cannot be ignored for long, but you have a moment to breathe and plan your action. Ignore the nudging for too long, though, and you might have a mini dragon (or a very upset cat) to deal with.

In the realm of agile transformation, understanding the difference between emergency and urgency becomes crucial. Beyond the Burning Platform – The garden
The old adage of a “burning platform” might depict the immediacy of a crisis, but it lacks the nuance of ongoing care and attention that an organization truly needs. Let’s explore a more holistic metaphor that emphasizes consistent nurturing and timely intervention: the garden.
The garden metaphor encapsulates the need for ongoing attention and care. If you take care of your garden, if you don’t neglect it then you can have beautiful plants growing and it can become luxurious allowing you to rip its benefits.
If you don’t take care of your garden, then the garden will begin to wilt.
The idea is to consistently taking care of a garden, to nurture it.
It’s not just about responding to crises (the pests), but also about preventative measures and regular nurturing (the pruning and watering). This continuous care model ensures that your organization doesn’t just survive, but thrives and grows, becoming more resilient over time.
Adopting the garden metaphor for understanding urgency and emergency within organizations encourages a proactive and nurturing approach. Rather than waiting for the platform to burn, we cultivate a lush garden, addressing challenges as they arise and consistently nurturing our organizational ecosystem.
